Better This Week - Hire For Hunger, You Better THINK, Self-Care Isn’t Bubble Baths...It’s This - Edition 26

Know Better.

Do Better.

Be Better.

Read Time: 5 minutes

Hi Reader,

Some weeks feel like a sprint. Others, like a stumble. But every week gives us a chance to start again.

A chance to show up with more heart. To listen deeper. To lead with values instead of ego. To choose presence over perfection.

You don’t need a dramatic breakthrough to change your life. You just need a few moments of intention.

And those moments?

They’re already waiting for you this week.

Let’s get better...together.

The “Hire for Hunger” Strategy

We love experience on paper. But legacy teams aren’t built by bullet points. They’re built by people with hunger, humility, and heart.

Want to spot your next MVP? Look past the pedigree and listen for potential.

How-To (What to Look For Instead):

  • Curiosity over credentials:
People who ask smart questions solve problems before they explode.
  • Resilience over reputation:
Give us the person who got knocked down, got back up, and took notes.
  • Initiative over job titles:
The ones who raise their hand before being asked? Gold.
  • Drive over polish:
You can teach finesse. You can’t teach fire in the belly.
  • Mindset over mastery:
A willingness to learn beats a need to be right.
  • Principles over presentation:
Because you can’t fake values. And you shouldn’t try.

🎯 Takeaway:
Skills can be sharpened. Character can’t be coached. Hire the person who’s not done becoming who they are.

🔥 Try This:
The next time you're interviewing, ask this:
"Tell me about a time you failed—and what you did next." You're not hiring a highlight reel. You're hiring a human.

🧠 Reflection:
Think about the best person you’ve ever worked with. What made them invaluable—résumé, or who they were when no one was looking?

Better @ Home

Because not every thought deserves airtime at the dinner table.

"THINK" Before You Talk

Home should be the safest place to say what you feel. But safe doesn’t mean sloppy. And honesty doesn’t have to bulldoze.

Words build worlds. Let’s make sure yours aren’t accidentally wrecking one.

How-To (Practice Intentional Speech at Home):

  • T = Is it True?
Don’t exaggerate to win the argument. State the facts. Let them breathe.
  • H = Is it Helpful?
Aim to move the moment forward, not just dump frustration.
  • I = Is it Inspiring?
Are you speaking life or draining it?
  • N = Is it Necessary?
Not every opinion needs a stage. Not every feeling needs a microphone.
  • K = Is it Kind?
If it costs you nothing to be kind, then be rich.

🎯 Takeaway:
Your tone becomes their internal voice.
Especially if they live under your roof.

🔥 Try This:
Next time conflict flares, pause and mentally run the THINK checklist before responding. Sometimes silence is smarter. Other times, kindness speaks volumes.

🧠 Reflection:
What’s one moment this week where you could’ve reacted…but chose to respond with care instead?

Better @ Life

Because the grind isn't glamorous if it burns you out.

The “Rest to Thrive” Strategy

Ever feel completely drained after a solid night’s sleep? It’s not just the hours you’re missing. It’s the fact that your mind and body are screaming for different types of rest, and you’re only giving them one.

How-To:

Here are 7 types of rest you need to avoid burning out and show up as your best self, based on research from Dr. Saundra Dalton-Smith.

1. Physical Rest 🛏️

Your body talks before it breaks down. If you’re exhausted after 8 hours in bed, it’s not the quantity—it’s the quality. Nap if you need to. Stretch. Move. Let your body recover.

2. Mental Rest 🧠

Your brain can only process so much. Give it a break by stepping away from constant decision-making. Even if you’re not thinking about work, you are thinking. Quiet it down. Get some headspace.

3. Sensory Rest 👀

Between your phone, laptop, and the beeping world around you, sensory overload is real. Dim the lights. Cut back on screen time. Give your senses the break they deserve.

4. Creative Rest 🎨

The “idea tank” runs dry when you don’t give it a chance to refill. Step outside, explore something new, or take a creative detour. Inspiration needs space to breathe.

5. Emotional Rest 💔

When you’re carrying everyone’s weight, your own gets heavy. It’s okay to take a step back and feel—without fixing. Let your emotions process without the pressure to constantly perform.

6. Social Rest 👥

We all need people, but too much the wrong kind of socializing can drain you. Say no to the wrong invites. Make space for the people who give you energy, not the ones who suck it dry.

7. Spiritual Rest 🕊️

Your soul needs fuel too. Connect to something bigger than the grind—whether it’s faith, nature, or a cause that makes you feel aligned with your deeper purpose.

🎯 Takeaway:
Rest isn’t an option; it’s an investment in your future self. Get intentional with your rest, and watch your performance, clarity, and energy rise.

🔥 Try This:
Pick one type of rest you’re missing the most right now and schedule it in. Whether it’s a nap, a quiet walk, or a tech-free hour—commit to it.
