Better This Week - Level Up Listening, Redefining Lazy, Touch it Once - Edition 25

Know Better.

Do Better.

Be Better.

Read Time: 5 minutes

Hi Reader,

There are two of the most powerful forces in the universe that bind us more deeply than almost anything: shared values and shared suffering.

Right now, much of the country is reeling. The recent string of horrendous events we have all witnessed has struck a chord - not just because of political ideology, but because violent loss reminds us of how fragile everything is. It awakens something in the heart that demands we choose what unites us, not what tears us apart.

If we lean into the good around us - our compassion, our faith, our belief in community - then suffering doesn’t have to divide us. It can elevate what we care about most.

I hope we all find a way to move forward with empathy and kindness. I, for one, believe our country desperately needs it.

Standing with you,

Brant

Better @ Work

Because leadership isn't about being the loudest voice, it's about hearing what others won't say out loud.

The “Level-Up Listening” Strategy

Let’s be honest: most of us think we’re good listeners. We nod. We give “active listening” face. We wait patiently for our turn to drop wisdom. But that’s not listening. That’s performing.

Real leadership requires something deeper.

How-To: Upgrade Your Listening in 5 Levels

  1. Waiting to Respond – You’re silent, but only because you’re crafting your comeback.
  2. Surface Hearing – You catch keywords… but you’re not really tuned in.
  3. Focused Attention – You’re present and processing what’s being said.
  4. Emotional Awareness – You hear the tone and feel what they’re feeling.
  5. Reading the Invisible – You notice what they don’t say. The shift in posture. The long pause. The sigh.

🎯 Takeaway:
The best leaders aren’t just better speakers.
They’re elite-level listeners. And they earn trust not by talking, but by truly hearing what’s underneath the words.

🔥 Try This:
In your next meeting or 1-on-1, go silent for 3–5 seconds after someone finishes talking.
No jumping in. No filler sounds. Just listen to the silence. You’ll be surprised what surfaces when people realize they’re actually being heard.

🧠 Reflection:
When’s the last time you felt truly listened to? What did that person do differently, and how can you bring that energy to your team this week?

How a Stubborn Gorilla Built a Gaming Empire: Nintendo’s Moment

In 1981, a stubborn gorilla and a little guy named Jumpman didn’t just win quarters — they saved Nintendo and launched a gaming empire.

Better @ Home

Because rest should recharge you, not erase you.

The “Redefining Lazy” Reset

At home, the line between rest and inertia is a whisper. One minute you're “just relaxing,” the next you're scrolling until you feel vaguely ashamed.

Let’s redefine lazy, so it serves you, not sabotages you.

How-To:
Create a ‘Kickstart’ Corner: Pick a spot in your home (no bigger than 3ft x 3ft) and keep it clean, bright, and inviting. It’s your mental green light.
Name Your Zones: Label areas in your head like “Chill,” “Focus,” “Recharge.” It helps your brain shift gears when you move between them.
Ban the ‘Blob Chair’: You know the one. Too comfy = too dangerous. Move your phone-charging cable away from it.
Set the Mood, Not Just the Task: Want to clean? Put on music. Writing? Light a candle. Pair the task with a small joy.
Micro-Rewards Matter: 20 minutes of effort = 5 minutes of play. It adds up—and keeps you going.

🎯 Takeaway:
You don’t need hustle mode. You need motion. A few intentional shifts turn “lazy” into “rested and ready.”

🔥 Try This:
Pick one room and assign it a new label this week - “Creative Den,” “Zen Zone,” or “Momentum Room.” Act accordingly when you enter.

🧠 Reflection:
What’s one small change you could make to your environment that would nudge you from stalled-out to slightly-in-motion?

Better @ Life

Because clutter is just procrastination in disguise.

The “Touch It Once” Hack

We don't realize how much unfinished business piles up, mentally and physically, because we keep saying, “I’ll deal with it later.”

Spoiler: Later never comes.

Let’s fix that with one of the simplest (and sneakiest) productivity hacks ever.

How-To:
• When you pick something up - finish the cycle.
• If you open an email - respond, delete, or archive it.
• If you grab the mail - sort it right then, not later.
• If you bring in the groceries - unpack and organize them fully.
• If you take off your shoes - put them away, not near the door.
• If you start a task - touch it once and complete it, or schedule when you will.

This rule isn’t about speed, it’s about reducing energy leaks caused by repeated decision-making and delayed action.

🎯 Takeaway:
The more times you “re-touch” something, the more brainpower it drains. “Touch it once” isn’t just for your stuff—it’s for your sanity.

🔥 Try This:
Pick one zone in your life - your desk, your inbox, your kitchen counter - and implement the “touch it once” rule for 48 hours. Track how much mental weight lifts.

🧠 Reflection:
Where in your life are you wasting the most time revisiting things you should’ve handled the first time?
